To celebrate National Bicycle Safety Month, Haverstraw police officers will be handing out free helmets to children and young adults in the village who need them throughout May.
Police will also distribute free gift certificates for McDonald’s on Route 9W in Haverstraw and the Target store in West Nyack to children who pro-actively wear helmets when biking, or riding a scooter or skateboard.
On Thursday, May 14, police and the Haverstraw Community Center are hosting a “Cops & Kids Bicycle Safety Program,” during which officers will photograph children’s bicycles, apply a serial number to them and put the numbers in their files in case the bikes are lost or stolen.
Every child that registers will receive a free helmet and bicycle safety literature. The community center is located at 50 West Broad St.
