SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Hundreds of family and friends said a final farewell to a 47-year-old state trooper killed in an off-duty cycling accident.
Trooper John Gorke was killed Friday when a car hit him from behind while he was riding with a friend on Route 20 about seven miles from his Jamesville home.
The 20-year-old driver said he lost control of his car as he tried to steer around the other bicyclist. No tickets were issued but authorities are continuing their investigation.
Gorke was a 19-year veteran who is survived by his wife and three sons.
As his funeral Tuesday, state police colleagues said they can’t imagine what it will be like to go back to their daily routines without Gorke.
